Inspired to blog

with one comment

I’ve left both nicthegeek and lucidmyth alone for the longest time by finding lots of excuses.   But after attending  Blogout09 last saturday, I was very inspired to restart my blogging.  Especially from the talks by yongfook (no, it’s not because he’s very hot!), lester and claudia.

But, as sharkie said when I told her about it, “WE SHALL SEE…”

And so, there it is.

NaBoPoMo

without comments

This looks fun…NaBoPoMo, the National Blog Posting Month where you have to post 1 blog post a day for a whole month. It’s the blogger version of NaNoWriMo.

Given that it takes me 2 months to put up 1 post on a 4 day tri, I’d probably have to sweat bullets just to do NaBoPoMo.  But it still sounds fun!

10 writing tips

without comments

Because I tend to lose things when I bury them deep deep deep in my bookmarks, here’s a copy off about.com posing as a blog post:

Ten Quick Tips to Improve Your Writing
By Richard Nordquist, About.com
Filed In: Composing Essays

Whether we’re composing a blog or a business letter, an email or an essay, our goal should be to respond clearly and directly to the needs and interests of our readers. These ten tips should help us to improve our writing whenever we set out to inform or persuade.

Lead with your main idea.
As a general rule, state the main idea of a paragraph in the first sentence–the topic sentence. Don’t keep your readers guessing.
See Practice in Composing Topic Sentences.

Vary the length of your sentences.
In general, use short sentences to emphasize ideas. Use longer sentences to explain, define, or illustrate ideas.
See Sentence Variety in Thurber’s “Life and Hard Times.”

Put key words and ideas at the beginning or end of a sentence.
Don’t bury a main point in the middle of a long sentence. To emphasize key words, place them at the beginning or (better yet) at the end.
See E.B. White’s New York in the 1940s.

Vary sentence types and structures.
Vary sentence types by including occasional questions and commands. Vary sentence structures by blending simple, compound, and complex sentences.
See Basic Sentence Structures.

Use active verbs.
Don’t overwork the passive voice or forms of the verb “to be.” Instead, use active verbs in the active voice.
See F. Scott Fitzgerald’s New York in the 1920s.

Use specific nouns and verbs.
To convey your message clearly and keep your readers engaged, use concrete and specific words that show what you mean.
See Descriptive Details in Wallace Stegner’s “Town Dump.

Cut the clutter.
When revising your work, eliminate unnecessary words.
See Practice in Cutting the Clutter.

Read aloud when you revise.
When revising, you may hear problems (of tone, emphasis, word choice, and syntax) that you can’t see. So listen up!
See On Reading Aloud.

Actively edit and proofread.
It’s easy to overlook errors when merely looking over your work. So be on the lookout for common trouble spots when studying your final draft.
See Revision Checklist and Editing Checklist.

Use a dictionary.
When proofreading, don’t trust your spell checker: it can tell you only if a word is a word, not if it’s the right word.
See Commonly Confused Words and Fifteen Common Errors.

We’ll close with a cautionary note borrowed from George Orwell’s Rules for Writers: “Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.”

This comic is so funny and so true. I got this link InkyGirl.com from the NaNoWriMo site. She’s a freelance writer and her comics are really fun too.

the lucid myth + city in the sky

without comments

I decided to combine my Geocities Lucid Myth blog and my City in the Sky blog, and use this as my current blog.

I’m still in the midst of transferring my posts from over the 2 places, which is why the posts are so old. not sure when I’ll be done, but it should be quite soon :D

istening to: the fan and my dad telling me to get to bed

But I have to finish this first la. Anyway haven’t really been updating anything here or at Cityinthesky over the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking a lot, but a lot of the thoughts just sound so boring and childish once you spell it out in words, so I thought, forget it. Been too busy anyway, what with Hong Kong, and that new ops manager, bleah. But, on the good side, I’ve finally finished another article, yay! haha looking at the dates, I actually did like 4 articles in 1 year and 1 month. this is so NOT the way to become a writer, then again, I never really had much chance la.

Listening to: the TV…whatever is on now I have no idea

I just discovered that…
My inner child is six years old today

My inner child is six years old!

Look what I can do! I can walk, I can run, I can
read! I like to do stuff, and there’s a whole
big world out there to do it in. Just so long
as I can take my blankie and my Mommy and my
three best friends with me, of course.

How Old is Your Inner Child?
brought to you by Quizilla

hahahaha actually that’s kinda scary…:P

In other news, I haven’t felt like updating either here or at City In The Sky for a couple weeks now, i think coz the weather has turned warm again, uggghh, i hate this kind of sticky, headache-forming weather, hope it turns a bit cooler soon, then i’ll come update what i missed these couple weeks…

Listening to: clanking of the air-con duct again

Grammar God!
You are a GRAMMAR GOD!

If your mission in life is not already to
preserve the English tongue, it should be.
Congratulations and thank you!

How grammatically sound are you?

My City in the Sky

without comments

hiakz, signed up for this for nothing, juz want to kpo on shir’s blog :P ok la, i thot i’d juz reserve this for all my mayday rants and raves (that’s why it’s city in the sky), else my lucid myth would get monotonous hehe

now listening to ufm 100.3, ke ning interviewing mayday, quite ok and funny, the ufm djs aren’t as corny or lame as 933 djs i think, altho i guess interviewers run out of questions, but ufm djs do ask more ‘intelligent’ questions.

like ke ning now, she’s talking about the old Yong Bao album, which is great!! guess she does her homework, and it’s great not to listen to anymore mindless nonsense about SGJ, i’m kinda sick of that topic hehe, i’d rather hear mayday talk about their early days, when they were still the ‘old’ mayday as some of us refer to them.

kudos to kening, and thanks to shir for intro-ing ufm to me ^_^ bye for now.

8th Sept 04
sigh, this was my 1st post on my Mindsay account. i signed up on Apr 26th to sneak a look at lovefool’s blog, and ended up blogging there for 5 months. I made this move to Blogger coz Mindsay upgraded to their v3 which didn’t support Chinese, and i realized that I had lost all my posts that were in Chinese. *sob*
